Electrophonics is an eclectic library of sounds created by, or processed through a modular synth system. Great for soundtrack work, but equally useful for adding texture or more organic elements to all types of electronic music.  There are 138 patches (plus an additional 32 Time Machine versions of patches with rhythmic content), made from more than 730, 24 bit 44.1kHz samples. The patches are arranged in categories: Coolicon, Drones, Filter Sweeps, Modular Tones, Odyssey FX, Percussion, Space Atmospheres, and Zither. There are also convolution impulses from a Roland SRE-555 and a Doepfer A-199 spring reverb.

The Coolicon is a type of light shade that was used at the BBC in the 1960s. While recording at the Radiophonic Workshop, Delia Derbyshire discovered that they were rich in harmonic overtones, (similar to a Tibetan Prayer bowl or bell), analysed the frequencies, then recreated the sound with a collection of oscillators. We’ve used band pass filters to break the sound down into its different components – some tonal and some atonal – and then processed them through a variety of synth modules and effects. There are 40 patches in the Coolicon section and the demo track ‘The Green Lamp’ was made purely from these.

The filters in our modular system include a cloned ARP 2600 by Analog Metropolis, a Buchla Low Pass Gate by Thomas White, a Blue Lantern Polivoks, Moog and TB303 types by Doepfer. Some sounds were also created by our ARP Odyssey and a toy zither.

The main panel has controls for volume envelope and modulation, pitch mod and filter controls (only a couple of patches use the Kontakt filter, but it is here as a convenient method of quickly changing timbre). There is also a global effects bypass switch. There are a further three control panels – Voicing/Time Machine, FX1 & FX2 – see the photos below.

Fingerpicking done right

Not only is Fingerpick sampled so that fingerpicking sounds natural, we included a Pattern Player that makes authentic playing easy. Just play chords on “the green keys,” and the Pattern Player does the rest. A dozen pattern styles to choose from. Designed specifically for the fingerpicking style. But wait, there’s more! With RealiBanjo, we learned that most people have no idea what patterns (rolls) a banjo player would play. We’re guessing it’s the same with acoustic guitar patterns. So we’ve included a Pattern Player with Fingerpick as well. Simply hold chords (almost any chord, including 9ths, dim, aug, sus4, etc.)

Fingerpick features:
PATTERN PLAYER
This is the fun part. It’s addicting, because you can actually create songs, as if you had a real player in front of you, by simply moving from chord to chord on the “green keys.” Fingerpick’s Pattern Player follows you.

When you do, be sure to throw in some “add2″ and sus4″ variations, to spice up your pattern, because that’s what real guitars players do. One of my favorite things is to play this sequence, 2 beats of each: G2, G, Gsus4, G.

Plus we have keyswitches, so you can even switch pattern styles in the middle of your playing. Like I said, it’s addicting!

And when you find a pattern you like, you can Drag&Drop it your sequencer!

AUTO-LEGATO
Guitar players often slide or hammer/pull into a note. We do have a legato keyswitch to make notes legato, but that’s kinda cumbersome. So we also have an “Auto-Legato” switch, which senses when you played a 2nd or minor 2nd interval and makes those legato, since that’s typically what a real player would do.

12-STRING MODE
Yeah, it’s a simulated 12-string, but like with Acoustic Lite, it sounds pretty darn good. Better, in fact, because we added the ability to adjust the detune, as well as where the split point is for octave versus unison courses.

CAPO POSITION
Fingerpickers are always using a capo. Not just to make the chords easier to play, but also because the tone changes as you go up the neck. So we give you that option with Fingerpick.

SWING AND HUMANIZE
Yes and yes.

What, you were hoping for more explanation than that? Okay, we have sliders for humanize (both timing and velocity) you can add some slop to the playing to make it sound more like your brother-in-law. And we also have a Swing slider, which lets you adsust from straight 16ths to . . . well . . . swing!

Ensoniq was founded in the early ’80s by some engineers from Commodore. Ensoniq’s first product, a software drum machine, was aimed at the home computer market. One of Ensoniq’s co founders, was responsible for designing the Commodore 64’s three-voice synth chip. In 1982 he designed a portion of a PC that was similar to the sound synthesizer that ended up in the Amiga. It was this chip, the ‘Q chip’, that was used in the Mirage, the world’s first affordable sampler and the ESQ-1, Ensoniq’s wavetable synthesizer. Later came the MR and ZR workstations. The Ensoniq MRKontakt library contains the Urban Dance and Real World sound sets that were popular in both the keyboard and rack hardware. The mixture of world ethnic and urban street sounds is very unique.

I did a master class , easily one of the most creative mixers ever to lay hands on a console. He told me he wanted me to stop thinking of compression as dynamics control and start thinking of it as a form of movement. UBK-1 is most definitely the result of taking that advice. I have way too much fun with its squishy mojo, the way it aggressively smacks sounds back into place, making them pump and move like living things.

Not every sound needs to be blown up, so I use the multiple parallel paths for subtle warming and sweetening effects. The headroom knob lets me adjust every stage’s intensity at once, making it enjoyable to experiment with all the colors it has to offer… and the UBK-1 has a lot of colors to offer.
